 World is Looking towards India for COVID 19 Vaccine Production


Vaccine are biological pharmaceutical preparation which provide active acquired immunity against a particular infectious disease. Vaccines are prepared from weakened or killed microorganisms or their toxins or their surface protein. Due to vaccination many infectious diseases eradicated from globe like polio, measles, small pox and tetanus. As per WHO report, twenty-five vaccines are licensed for preventing infections.

As per WHO report, India supplies 90% of measles vaccine and other vaccines like BCG, Pertussis, Diphtheria and Tetanus vaccines are produced (40-70%) by Indian Pharmaceutical Companies.

As the COVID 19 pandemic hit the world in 2020, Indian Pharmaceutical sector rose up and was able to manufacture sufficient drugs to maintain supply chain. Drugs like hydroxyl-chloroquine and paracetamol were exported to more than 150 countries. Hence Indian Pharmaceutical Sector become the “Reliable Pharmacy of the World”

Indian Pharmaceuticals are producing 60% of the COVID 19 vaccines produced all over the world and is playing vital role in vaccination of common people.

Second wave of COVID 19 has increase sales of medicines and resulted in instant growth in Indian Pharmaceutical Companies sales. The Indian Pharmaceutical sector sales increased 59% in April 2021 as compared to April 2020. Consumption of cardiac medicines grows by 22 %, anti-diabetic drugs by 10%. Vitamins and Mineral supplements recorded growth by 80% in April 21, which is highest after falling for 9 months

Similarly respiratory medicine sale grew by 64% in april. Major players are Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (172%), Cipla (77%), Cadila (53 %), Alkem (82%), Macleods (69%) and Sun Pharma (50%).  

According to projection for next five years, Indian Pharmaceutical market can grow by 9-12 percent. All these parameters indicate that there is huge potential in Indian Pharmaceutical Sector to become “Mother of Pharmacy” all over the globe.
