Use of Plastic Waste in Road Construction

In our country most of the paved roads have generally granular sub base and base course; and other

paved material like bituminous base and cement concrete courses. Plastic waste is one such a resource,

a major component of solid waste material which is available in nature and can be disposed of without

proper treatment. Hence it can be say that Plastic is a versatile material which can be used in

construction industry and majorly in road construction. By researcher it is found that plastic can remain

on earth for 4500 years without disintegration and degradation.

Use of Plastic Waste in Road Construction

If we look up into the industrial revolution, and its large scale production plastic seemed to be a very

cheap and effective raw material. Plastic was found to be an effective binding material for bituminous

base course ; ie wear courses used in flexible pavements. This effective and efficient method helps the

pavement to prevent formation of random cracks with minimizing the rainwater infiltration otherwise a

pavement leads to development of various defects as Potholes in it.

Waste plastic is generally shredded & coated over coarse aggregate & mixed with hot bitumen sample

and resultant mix is used for wearing course pavement construction. Use of Plastic waste in systematic

manner in road construction will not only help to increase the strength of the pavement and also can be

helpful to increase its durability, both properties for a road pavement is quite essential and necessary.

This method of using waste material will have a positive impact on the environment as well as it will

decrease the rate of the volume of plastic waste to be disposed of by incineration and land filling even It

will not only add value to plastic waste but will develop a eco friendly technology in construction

industry. For better performance, a form of bitumen which is polymer modified bitumen used which

helps to have better binding of bitumen with plastic waste coated aggregate due to increased loading

and reduces the voids.
